Finding your Flow in 5 keys steps

Have you ever noticed that when you are rushing around getting through your to-do list and doing all those things that you committed to doing, that you are almost doing things in a “going through the motions” sort of way? And when you think about it, you are less present in the moment and more present in your thinking around the next place you need to be or the next thing you’ve got to do. Then it gets to the point of being switched on and focused on those things in the future rather than being present in the moment and more grounded in yourself.

Spending too much time thinking about the things you should be or need to be doing deprives you of that essential “me time” which allows you to find your natural and organic flow. What if you went at things more based on your natural flow and wishes? What would it feel like to be much more present in the here and now and more fluid about what you choose to do next? Here are 5 simple steps to help you start the process of finding and tapping into your natural flow.

Let go of should’s and need to’s!

Firstly, to build your connection to your natural flow, start by giving yourself a day off from all those things you feel you should be doing or need to be doing. Mark a day in your calendar regularly where you allow yourself to just go with the flow. Don’t plan or overthink the day. Try and step into the day with no agenda and see what comes to you. What is it you feel drawn to do, not because you have to, or someone else said you should, but because you just simply feel that inner urge to give yourself that experience? Maybe pause for a moment and ask yourself the following question: what are those things that I have talked myself out of doing because I felt I was too busy, or just couldn’t give myself the time to do. Those are potentially missed opportunities to be in your flow. So, to nurture being in your natural flow choose those things that you feel curious about or drawn to trying out, without bringing in the should’s or need to’s.

Explore what you are drawn to or curious about

If you are thinking that you wouldn’t even know where to start. Take a moment and consider what are some potential things you’ve felt curious about in the past, and never got around to doing. What hobbies or activities are you curious about but talked yourself out of trying cos you thought you might not be any good at them? This is not about if you are good at something or not, it is more about what the experience of doing that thing will give you. Maybe you will meet some new people, maybe you will enjoy the experience, maybe it will be something you will go back to again and again. You won’t know any of this unless you are willing to allow yourself to try.

Get connected to your natural flow by being out in nature!

Another essential aspect of finding your inner flow is to give yourself time out in nature, experiencing all that the natural world has to offer you. Think about what you could do outdoors? It could be something as simple as sitting in a local park and observing nature around you. Allow yourself to be present in the moment. It could be being by the sea, enjoying the experience that being by water gives you. Or maybe it’s being in woodlands and feeling that energy that resonates around you from the trees and wildlife that live there. We are all essential elements of this universe and are connected to the energies of the universe. Think for a moment and ask yourself what aspect of our natural world you would like to explore and experience and give yourself some time to do that.

Pause, be still, and enjoy the moment!

As you work to be more in your natural flow, it’s also important once you have created that time for yourself and chosen something that you are drawn to do, that you allow yourself to fully embrace and be present in the moment and the experience. Let go of all those thoughts that go through your head day to day. And for the time you are in your flow let them go. Focus on what you are in, what you are doing and what it is giving you. Remember being in the present is a gift you give yourself every day.

Slow down..

Finally, and most importantly daily allow yourself to slow down, slow down your breathing if you recognise that it’s shallow and quick. Slow down how quickly you move about, do you rush from one thing to another, if so, pause and slow your pace. Don’t always try to fill your time, slow down on committing to do things, take a moment and consider what some free space and time would give you. Think about your days ahead, what would help to slow things down for you over the next week? Where can you create some time to allow yourself to go with your flow?

So, to reflect on how to get more connected to your natural flow, be mindful of your should’s and need to’s and let those go if they get in, the way of accessing your natural flow. Do what you feel drawn to and curious about, without talking yourself out of it. Think about getting out in nature as it supports you in getting more connected to your natural flow. And as you step into those things that you are naturally drawn to, pause, be present and enjoy the moment. Remember being present is a gift you can give yourself every day. Finally, to build on these steps, think about how you can begin to slow things down daily so that you can be more present and more able to connect to your natural flow.
